As a family photographer I meet a LOT of families with children of all ages. Often, during their consultation and photography session we’ll chat about what they’ve been up to that week. I’m always amazed at the array of activities which are available right here on our doorstep, catering for all ages and interests. Remembering back to when my children were small, I felt it might be helpful to share this with you too!
Recently I attended a reunion event at Cams Mill, for new parents who had attended Let’s Talk Birth and Baby antenatal classes. So welcome to the first blog in my ‘Local Life’ series, where Louise will share a little more about what it’s all about…….
Tell us about your business…what do you do?
I offer midwife led antenatal classes helping parents prepare for late pregnancy, labour, birth and beyond. With a fun and honest approach (and NO role play!) these classes offer a wealth of guidance and support. Ensuring no stone is left unturned we cover everything from an unexpected home delivery to an emergency c-section and everything in-between.
The carefully selected venues provide a welcoming environment where parents can relax, enjoy a drink and a bite to eat whilst they learn about the road ahead. Held across Petersfield, Winchester, Chichester, Havant, Fareham and Southsea, group sizes are kept small. So everyone has the opportunity to ask questions and to get to know each other.
During the sessions we discuss birthing plans, hypno birthing techniques, pain relief options and coping strategies whilst at home. In addition, we compare in depth the pros and cons of both formula and breastfeeding options.
Hands on elements of the course include vital practical parenting skills. For example, how to bathe baby safely and nappy changing.
Parenting, especially in the early days, can be challenging. So, I’ve intentionally included a focus on parental mental health and well being. There is a strong emphasis on support for Dads and birth partners throughout the course. As a result they, as well as mum, are as ready as they can be for their new arrival with the support they need too.
What makes your business unique?
As a practising midwife parents receive continued support. From the moment they book onto the course, throughout their pregnancy and during the weeks following the birth. This is so beneficial as it helps to reduce the amount of anxiety as worries and questions can be quickly addressed and answered.
I feel it’s really important that parents have the opportunity to build a great support network. That’s why, alongside the courses I also organise a variety of activities. These currently include a weekly bumps and babies group, cinema trips and weekly walks. All helping to make the transition to parenthood that little bit easier.
What are you passionate about outside of your business?
I have two children myself, Jack (16) and Isobelle (11) and have been together with their Dad for 22 years! The other love of my life is my fur baby Rufus the Cockapoo who keeps me busy. I love running and cooking and a glass of wine. Other than that my passion really does lie with the couples that I support during and after their pregnancy – with the added bonus of the occasional baby cuddle!
Describe your perfect day?
My perfect day is lying on the beach on holiday, reading a book and watching my kids trying to drown each other in the pool! Lovely.
What other local business do you love and why?
I love the ‘Like a Tea Tray in the Sky’ tea room in Southsea. It is such a hidden Gem! Gorgeous food with pushchair access I really recommend it.
What’s your favourite thing to do/place to go when you’re hanging out with your own family?
All of my family enjoy breakfast in Southsea’s Irish Bar and Cafe Shenanigans …you see it all revolves around food!
“The decision to found Lets Talk Birth and Baby is as a result of caring for many couples who felt that despite having attended antenatal classes, they had not felt prepared when events deviated from the norm.
My hope and mission is that the courses will provide a safe, private and comfortable environment in which to prepare couples for every eventuality. To provide support during labour and delivery, in those first few weeks following the new arrival and create life long friendships with those embarking on the same exciting journey.”
